Uttarpara, a quiet village in Gabtali Upazila, Bogra, is Bangladesh’s hidden hub of handcrafted wooden furniture. Starting with humble wooden sandals (padukas), the craft expanded into stools, yokes, and now modern furniture such as beds, showcases, and sofa sets.
Over the years, 8 large and 20 medium factories have emerged. Local artisans work year-round to meet demand from rural fairs and urban markets alike. The quality and affordability of their products have earned them a strong customer base.
Workers earn fair wages, and the community depends heavily on this craft. Their only challenge is unreliable electricity, which hampers productivity.
