About Shaoil Village
Located in the Nasratpur Union of Adamdighi Upazila, Bogra district, Shaoil village has earned its reputation as Bangladesh’s premier ‘Blanket Village’. Since 1990, the innovative residents have developed a revolutionary method of transforming discarded fabric scraps from garment factories into warm blankets and winter clothing.
What started as an experimental venture by enterprising villagers has evolved into a sustainable industrial innovation that not only provides livelihoods for over 15,000 families but also serves as a beacon of environmental protection. By collecting fabric scraps from garment factories across Dhaka, Chittagong, and Narayanganj, the village has prevented countless tons of textile waste from polluting rivers and waterways.
Today, Shaoil village stands as Bangladesh’s industry-based model village, where environmental consciousness meets economic empowerment. The village’s unique marketplace, housing around 1,000 shops, serves customers from all 64 districts of Bangladesh, including indigenous communities from the Chittagong Hill Tracts who come to purchase affordable cotton for their traditional garments.
