Kaliganj and five surrounding villages in Pirgachha Upazila, Rangpur, have woven a vibrant identity through the craft of hand fan making. Originally introduced by Nazrul Islam and Abdul Mannan after training in Gaibandha, this cottage industry has become the main livelihood for over 200 families.
Discarded fabrics from garment factories are repurposed and transformed into hand fans using bamboo or wicker frames. The colorful designs are created with iron or bamboo needles. Finished fans are sold locally or by hawkers traveling across the region via bus and train.
Despite financial challenges, including high yarn prices and dependence on NGO loans, the fan-making tradition thrives—testifying to the village’s resilience and creativity.
